The Empire Games.
Dear Sir,—l was rather amused at your correspondent saying that if F. J. Grose strikes his top form at the Empire Games he will take a power of beating and that although Grose was beaten in the New Zealand championships (grass track) he was not at his best; also that he will ride much better on a banked track. Grose has always been recognised as a good grass track rider and his form in the New Zealand championships was good enough lor him to win the three miles, only 4sec slower than O. Disley’s record in the Wellington championships of 1934, Disley’s time for tne three miles being 7min 3sec. With all due respect to Grose, he was at his best when he was beaten in the above New Zealand championships by his worthy opponent, G. R. Giles, and w’hether Grose has a better right than Giles to the Empire Games team is a question which is freely discussed. Giles is the holder of all Canterbury track titles a§ well as two New Zealand titles, so that if Grose is going to take a power of beating at the Empire Games what chance must Giles have had? Grose has certainly been selected on his past performances, which, to my idea, is a most ridiculous way of compensating him for his previous disappointments.—l am. etc., DISGUSTED.
