Tolerance to the Mayor.
Dear Sir, —The whole of this subject deals with the attitude taken by contemporaries against the Mayor in his activity for civic authority regarding the collection of public moneys designated the Mayor’s fund for allocation to the numerous forms of relief administration. His diligence is wholly for the social welfare of our city. Do they deny him the merit of his initiative? The organisation of social order requires the co-operation of all citizens; apart from party politics. Why is it that his contemporaries desire to interfere with tnc name of the Mayor’s fund ? Why sow the seeds of stagnation, interference and intolerance? Why not allow the dignity of the official capacity to maintain the responsibility of judgment conferred upon the person in his election to office? Can it be said that he has failed to rise to the occasion to organise the forces of co-opera-tion to meet the demands of extraordinary times? Do the contemporaries deny him the merit of his motive force? Why not give him the co-operation to maintain the motive force and the dignity of his capacity as Mayor? It cannot be said that his office is subject to political corruption or that any error of judgment is due wholly to the Mayor. It must be remembered that the civic authority has a system of accountancy beyond reproach. Will his contemporaries not respect the capacity of the Mayor as the masses would be called upon to be tolerant of and give official recognition to any person who occupied the position? Therefore may I suggest that t.ie Mayor be allowed the freedom of his own motive force and initiative and a respectable tolerance to his capacity. Give him the co-operation necessary to father this city in its common temporal welfare, which can be summed up in one word :* Authority.—l am, etc., T. WEST. 314, Oxford Terrace.
