BATTERED SAFE.

Would-be Thievas Baffled in Attempt. A pick, a hammer and chisels were used without result in an attempt last night to break open the in the premises of Messrs John Brightling, Ltdcartage contractors, at the corner of Colombo and Carlyle Streets. The tools were taken from an adjacent monumental mason’s yard. After climbing over the roof of a lean-to and going across a small yard at the back of Brightling's premises, the thieves smashed a window and got into the office. Two safes here were* left alone, attention l>eing lavished on another safe in the manager’s room. The handle was broken off, and it was considerably dented. There was no money in the safe, as it contained only a few papers.
