HARRIERS.

Notes on the Various Clubs’ Activities. Several Christchurch Club members show promise for the Kennett Cup race to be held at the Rieearton racecourse on June 2. On present form, G. H. Watson and R. Rogers are the two fastest runners, but there are several seniors who are holding back, as they have been engaged in track work and wish to conserve their energies for the bigger events. Likely runners in the teams race to be held on May 12 from the Old Stone House, Cracroft Wilson Estate. Cashmere, will be selected from the following: G. H. AVatson, S. H. Bowden, D. H. Pa nnell, T. Wilhelm. R. Rogers and L. Knight The club has a promising first-year runner in S. Donohue. Tomorrow’s run will be held from the “ Sign of the Takalie,” Cashmere Hills. The Anglican Harrier Committee has decided to hold four handicap races at intervals during the season for the trophy donated by a vice-president (Mr W. W. Dunkley). Two will be run in conjunction with the elub steeplechase and two with the club championship on May 26. Points will be awarded to the first three men home and to the first, second and third fastest times. Many new members have shown outstanding capability. C. Skerten finished third in the fast pack last Saturday after a fast run. T. Gillett also has done well this season. To-morrow’s run will be from St Paul’s Schoolroom, Papanui. Members of the Methodist Club are reminded that training is being held under the coach. C. S. Ell, at the Durham Street Schoolroom on Monday nights. A prominent runner in the fast pack is C. P. Dixon, who is making full use of a much-improved sprint. E. H. Shelton and E. AV. Low have both been putting in consistent performances in the medium pack. It will not be long before these two members qualify for the fast pack. For the teams* race to be held on May 26 it has been decided this year to take times rather than placings in comparing the teams. It is thus hoped to provide a greater incentive for slower competitors to finish well. To-morrow’s run will be held at the invitation of Dr ,T. H. Simpson, 56, Puriri Street, Rieearton. Keen interest is being taken in the Novice Race to he held by the Presbyterian Harrier Club to-morrow. The large number of entrants should assure an interesting contest, and the first few home are expected to be worthy of a place in the fast pack. The handicap system introduced among the racing men last Saturday showed signs of being a great success, and should raise the standard a great deal. To-morrow's run will be held from the residence of Mrs Sisson, 66, Veitch’s Road, Papanui. j Club coaches would do well to stress the importance of making training a gradual process. Start a month or so I before the date of the events and work

up to form gradually. To rush right into hard, tiring work at the outset will tend to weaken Instead of strengthening. It is almost impossible to adopt a set method of training, for every race varies, and is run over different types W. Suckling, of the Baptist Harrier Club’s intermediate pack, is showing vast improvement. With a little more training he should be fit to run with the fast men. D. Brown, a former Canterbury junior 880yds champion, ran well to fill second place in the fast pack. The club’s annual novice race will be held to-morrow from the residence of Mr and Mrs O. F. Reddell. Nicholls Street. Richmond. C. A. B. Stevenson* (Technical) should stand a good chance for- the junior championship, which will be run in about three weeks’ time. C. • 1-1. Matthews, Canterbury mile champion, is perhaps the club’s best asset. He will be included in a team for the Kennett Cup race, together with L. JT. Milner (lately of the Baptist Harriers), C. A. B. Stevenson, R. Duckmanton and R. de la Cour. To-morrow the club will again run from the Ensor's Road pavilion. To-morrow th’e Varsity Club will he the guests of Mr and Mis R. (I. Darwin. 26, Stratford Street, Fendalton.
