At the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council, the .Mayor (Mr .1. W. Greenslade) presided. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote regarding the Greymouth-Cobden merger. He stated that a local Bill was necessary for the amalgamation, which would be for a term of seven years. The matter was left to the Town Clerk and the engineer to confer with the Cobden Town Board to complete effect as from October 1. Mr L. Panckhurst wrote cancelling his offer regarding the unformed portion of Raleigh Street. It was decided that the Government be asked to proceed with the necessary legislation for the formation of the street and to continue with the survey, subject to the approval of the landholders in Raleigh Street. A request was received for the setting aside of a parking place Tor motorcycles in Maekay Street. It was decided that there was no space available for the purpose. Requests for Flaying Areas. Applications for the use of the Recreation Ground as a playing area were received from the West Coast Rugby Union, West Coast Rugby League Centre and Westland Football Association, and were referred to the Finance Committee. It was decided that the council make an inspection of the area on Wednesday next. Councillors Kent and Kitcliingham were delegated to bring any matter tiiat inay.be necessary before the Main Highways Board on the occasion of its forthRiver Protection. A letter was received from the actingDistrict Engineer of Public Works regarding the Teramakau River erosion, near Orangipuku. He stated that protective measures should be taken at an early date. The Minister had approved of the work being done and suggested that the Unemployment Board be approached for a sum of £SOO towards labour. The proposed works would cost £1445. Half of the balance required would be supplied by the Public Works Department, the other half to be found by the local bodies affected—Greymouth Harbour Board. Grey Power Board, Grey County Council and Greymouth Borough Council. The engineer was instructed to confer with the county engineer and report back to the council. The full council was appointed to attend the conference of local bodies to discuss the proposed landing site for planes at the rear of the hospital. Councillor Kitchingham explained that the reason why the Civic Band’s application for a subsidy bad been refused was that the council was bound by its agreement to pay £6O per annum to the Municipal Band towards the conductor’s salary, and there were no other funds available. The engineer reported that the reservoir had been kept full, with an average nightly pump of 8J hours. Work on the laying of the 12in supply main was progressing satisfactorily, a total of 2055 feet having been laid to date. The value of building permits issued for the month of March was £864. Accounts amounting to £2232 8s were passed for payment. The fees collected at the abbatoir for February and March totalled £225 15s Bd. and stock slaughtered totalled 1993. Books issued at the Municipal Library last month totalled 2927. Transport Board. Dr S. A. Gibbs presided at a meeting of the No. 7 District Transport Licensing Authority. The following applications for goods and passenger service licenses were dealt with:— G. R. Hareourt (Harcourt’s Aard Motors), renewal of passenger service license from Hokitika to Okarito.— Granted. A. B. Spiers, passenger service license from Kumara to Kumara railway station.—Granted. R. C. Hempseed, renewal of passenger service license from Waiuta to Ikamatua.—Granted, with the condition that all information relating to the license as required by the authority be supplied by the applicant by April 20. The application of Newman’s Motors for authority to reduce return fares from f2 10s to £2 2s 6d on the HokitikaWeheka route during May and August was approved. Civic Band Concert. The first honorary members’ concert of the 193 4 season of the Greymouth Civic Band was held at the Town Hall. There was a large attendance. The band, under the conductorship of Air A. M’Master, gave an excellent rendering of their portion of the programme, all their items being well received. The assisting artists were Mr J. Hadland, Misses Freeman-Brown. Marshall, Clayton and N. M’Donnell. The support given during the Christmas carolling, he said, had enabled them to pay off their liabilities. The band had decided to purchase a new set of uniforms, and these were expected to come to hand before Anzae Day. The funeral of Clifford Judd, son of Mr and Mrs H. C. Judd. Town Belt took place on Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended. The pupils of the Grey Main School lined either side of the street as the cortege left the house, en route to the Karoro Cemetery.
