COUNTY RATES.

Fine Response Made by Europeans. GISBORNE, April 13. The Matakaoa County Commissioner (Mr Chas. Bull) reports that rates collected for the past financial year totalled £5515 out of £10,806 struck. A feature of the collections was the fine response by European settlers, who paid £4843. or 77£ per cent, of their rating obligations, whereas Native occupiers paid only £671, or 14$ per cent, of the rates struck on their lands. In addition to the year’s rates as mentioned above £2692 was paid off arrears, the total receipts being £8227, against £3614 for the previous year.

With the approach of the winter months, boxing enthusiasts are hard in training for the first bouts to be staged during this month. The chief attraction will be a bout between Dave Palmer and Watty Robertson. Palmer has a good record, and Robertson is doing well under the tuition of Jack Heeney at Gisborne. He has decisions over Fitzmaurice, Hughes and Griffin. Among the local men to take the ring will be Waide. Warbrick and Ted (Afotueka) will meet J. Brosnahan (America). Homing Club. Mr C. Haase’s “All Blue” was first home in the Nelson Homing Club’s race from Otaki, its time being 1023 yards per minute. W. K. Exton's “ Red Shadow ” was second and Pat Burnes's “ Aliss Nelson ” third. Scottish Society. The Scottish Society’s inglesidcs continue in popularity, and Tuesday's function was exceptionally well attended. Chief G. Jamieson was in the c-liair and the Mayor (.Mr VV. J. Moffatt), Chieftains J. Fingland, Brownlie and N. Henderson were among those present. During the evening items were rendered by Miss M. Henderson. Renewed interest was created at the Women's Club by the play-reading circle, which presented Barrio's ” Quality Street” to a large attendance.
