SALVAGE CORPS.
Fire Experts May Hold Inquiry. j LONDON SCANDAL. (Special to the - Star.”) LONDON, March 2. A special sub-committee of general managers of the fire insurance companies is to consider the future of the London Salvage Corps, whose chief officer, Captain B. E. Miles, has been sentenced to four years’ penal servitude on charges of corruption. The committee is composed of the chairman of the London Salvage Corps (Mr Herbert Lewis) and four ex-chair-men of the Corps. It was constituted some months ago to consider matters arising out of the fire charges, but it decided to take no action in regard to the Corps until after the trial of Captain Miles. In the meantime, Mr G. H. Whiteman, the secretary of the Corps, is acting as Chief. Numerous applications for the p~~tof Captain of the London Salvage Corps have been received from exnaval and military officers and others. To date the answer they all received was that no vacancy existed. Allegations of widespread corruption in the Corps were made at the trial, and leading members of the fire insurance companies feel that in fairness to the public and the members of the Corps there should be a thorough inquiry.
