GREYHOUNDS FIGHT.
Exciting Scene on a . Train. SIX LOSE LIVES. (Special to the “ Star.”) LONDON, March 2. Three greyhounds were killed and three others so seriously injured that they had to be destroyed as a result of a remarkable fight in a greyhound van attached to the Scotch express from Aberdeen to the South yesterday. There were 40 dogs in the van, and first signs of the conflict were discovered as the train was leaving Carlisle. The news caused some excitement among the passengers and train officials. At Crewe, the next stopping place, the van was opened. Three of the dogs had apparently been mauled to death. Others were lying prostrate, while a number were foaming at the mouth. " The dogs were howling and most of them had broken their slips,” an official said. “ The station staff would not take the risk of entering the van, which was detached from the express. “ A veterinary surgeon, Captain R. M. Lee, was sent for and he succeeded in pacifying the enraged animals. Three had to be destroyed and five others vwere treated for wounds.” The dogs were on the way to Hastings and Southampton.
WHAT, INDEED? We must strive against peevishness while we are young, or else what will become of us when we are old?—C. Buck.
