ASHBURTON NEWS.
Allocations for Unemployed Relief. (Special to the "Star.”) ASHBURTON, February 22. The Ashburton unemployment register contains a list of 308 men, of whom 15 are in class A, 192 in class B and 101 in class C. The tentative allocation for next week is one, two and three days respectively. Hakatere Lodge, 1.0.0. F. A meeting of the Hakatere Lodge, 1.0.0. F., was held last evening, when the V.G. (Brother D. Hunter) presided. Two members were reported to be on the sick list. One candidate for membership was proposed. The Ridgely Lodge, Christchurch, forwarded an invitation to a social evening, and it was agreed to suggest March 17 as a suitable date. A letter was received from the Star of Opawa Lodge, advising its intention to visit Ashburton, and, if desirable, to conduct an initiation ceremony. The visit was agreed to, March 16 or April 18, being suggested as suitable dates. Five candidates were initiated into the Order. The first nominations for officers were received. Brother G. Fowke expressed the lodge’s thanks to Brother Cobb,, who is leaving shortly for New Plymouth, for his work for the lodge, especially on the social side of the lodge’s activities. Personal. Captain W. J. Thompson and Mrs Thompson, who have been in charge of the Ashburton Salvation Army corps for the past three years, will leave for .Wellington on Tuesday next. Their successors, Captain E. Bicknell and Mrs Bicknell, of Devonport, Auckland, will arrive in Ashburton next Thursday.
