CYCLING NOTES.

BY

“WHEEL.”

The New Brighton Cycling Club conducted a successful road championship for novice riders last Saturday. Despite the exceptionally bad weather conditions, over thirty riders started. The course, from New Brighton to Woodend and return was given out as forty miles and was handicapped as such, the limit tin-nod t "|’*‘ ,ve ni inu tes. The time reconsiderably short of forty miles. The winner, riding off the ten-minute mark, covered the distance in Ihr 25min mu 6 *' Hn * mpossib * e time for forty The club is to be congratulated on the arrangements made for the running of the championship. Tire riders were dispatched without a hitch and checked in without any errors. The handicapping was open to criticism, however, the limit of 12rnin being too big, the backmarkers not having a chance to get up. Iv. Shanks (lmin) who gained fastest time, finished 7mins 20secs be- | hind the winner, who was in receipt of a start of 9min from Shanks, the gain by Shanks on the winner being lmin 40sees. The riding powers of the back markers were badly over-estimated. The scratch men, by not making a good showing, let the handieappers down. W. D. Murray, who won the handicap, is practically a new rider. He is a brother of the well-known amateur, J. G. Murray. Murray rode a really good race for a novice, leaving his comarkers to go on to finish alone, 49sec in front of the second man. Murray gives promise of developing into a firstclass cyclist. R. W. Rondel, second place, has ridden in several novice races without wefl tin& WUh much success. He finished J.
