Tapping Tele phones.

Dear Sir, —One would not expect the “ Star ” to become the apologist for the Post and Telegraph Department, even where the persecution of bookmakers is concerned, and I therefore join issue with the statement published in your columns that telephone lines are never tapped. I can supply information regarding a case in which telephones were tapped, and not merely listened-in to on the premises, and I consider that if the Department accepts money for a telephone it has no right to do this, even if a nominal breach of the law is being committed. I was very glad to see an admission by the Magistrate in a recent case that thousands of people desired to bet with the bookmakers. For my part I do not see why they should not be permitted to do so if they wish. Whom does it hurt anyway?—l am etc GRANDMOTHER.
