OUT OF CONTROL.

Car Overturns at Alford Forest. THREE PERSONS HURT. Three people were injured when a car owned by Mr J. E. Rowntree, stock agent, of Newnham Terrace, Riccarton overturned at Alford Forest, yesterday morning. The injured were. Ernest Rowntree, aged nineteen years, broken right-arm, and wounds on the right hand. Condition serious. Effie Rowntree, aged twenty years, broken right arm, and wounds on the skull. Condition satisfactory. Arthur Rowntree, aged ten years, a minor fracture at the base of the skull, and a wound on the neck Condition satisfactory. The family were driving to Alford Forest when the steering column broke, and the car overturned. The injured people were admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital. Mr and Mrs Rowntree and a child escaped serious injury. Motor-cyclist Breaks Leg. Clifford Manson, aged twenty-one years, of Dorie, was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital on Sunday morning with a broken leg, as a result of a fall from a motor-cycle, which he was riding, when the machine skidded in loose metal. Riccarton Collision. Two cars, one a milk delivery van, collided at the corner of Ilam and Riccarton Roads on Sunday morning. The milk van was driven by Mr A. Thompson, Main South Road, and the car by Mr F. Clarke, Weston Road, St Albans. Nobody was injured, although the cars suffered considerably. Taken 111 at Mass. Mrs Catherine Kennedy, an elderly widow’, for many 3 r ears postmistress at Loburn, was taken ill while attending the midnight Christmas Mass at the Rangiora Catholic Church in company with her daughters. She was able to leave the church, but she became rapidly worse. Dr E. S. M’Phail was sent for and Mrs Kennedy was removed to the Presbytery, where she expired soon afterwards. A Lucky Escape. The occupants of two motor-cars which collided at the intersection of Stanmore Road and Avonside Drive last evening had a lucky escape, the only injury being a slight cut received by one of the drivers. The cars involved were fairly heavy vehicles. One was driven by Mr M. Faigan, 4, Bayfield Road, Herne Bay, Auckland, and the other by Mr J. A. Cook, 23, Nelson Street, New Brighton. Mr Faigan was driving south along Stanmore Road, and he finished up against a telegraph pole on the lefthand side, travelling towards town. The other car, was carried along for some distance and finished up in the picket fence on the corner. Motor-cycle Skidded. A single man, Francis Eiles, 47 Racecourse Road, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital on Saturday night with a fracture of the right leg He was injured when the motor-cycle he was riding skidded at the intersection of Tuam Street and Olliviers Road. His condition is now' reported to be satisfactory. Collided With Pole. While turning into Cemetery Road, off Buckley’s Road, yesterday after, noon, L. F. Richard, riding a motorcycle, collided with a telephone pole. He suffered head injuries and was taken to the Christchurch Hospital by the St John Free Ambulance. His condition is satisfactory. Schoolboy Drowned. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 25. A tragip sequel to a schoolboy’s fishing expedition occurred at Hamilton, on the Waikato River, on Sunday, when Ivan Manuel, aged eleven, son of Mrs M. Manuel, Claudelands, w r as drowned. The boy went fishing with a companion and fell into the river when attempting to retrieve a rod which had dropped into the current. The lad was unable to swim. His companion, Kendall Wilmshurst, aged eleven, plunged to the rescue fully clothed, but was unable to hold up his friend, who sank Another youth dived in and recovered the body. An inquest was opened and adjourned after evidence of identification. , Yacht Swamped. Per Press Association. GREYMOUTH, December 25. Ronald Bouten Messenger, thirtythree years of age, single, an able seaman, formerly of the s.s. Opihi, but latterly residing with his widowed mother at Greymouth, was drowned this afternoon when a yacht he was sailing with James Rhodes, aged forty-two, was swamped in the Grey River. The yacht turned over twice. Messenger then made for the shore, but suddenly sank, although he was a powerful swimmer. Rhodes suffered from cramp but clung to the boat until rescued a few 3'ards from the river bar. Messenger’s body has not been recovered. The rescue of Rhodes was effected by two boys in a flat-bottomed boat equipped j only with paddles. Car and Cycle Collide. « Per Press Association. WESTPORT, December 25. A motor-car and motor-c\'de met in a head-on collision in Westport on Saturday night, and two men were seriously injured and removed to hospital. The injured are Mr ITill, fanner, at Sergeant’s Hill, and Mr Sherlock, Fairdown.
