OWNER AND RIDER.

R. Lewis Hands in Mr Clarke’s Colours. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, December 23. The veteran Bobby Lewis, the doyen of Australian jockeys, handed in Mr E. E. D. Clarke’s colours to-day, ending a long association extending over thirty years. Mr Clarke is at present in New Zealand. The decision of Lewis has caused a sensation. It is believed that his action arose out of friction with James Scobic, who trains Mr Clarke’s horses. It is not the intention of Lewis to give up riding. Lewis made a statement that he had written to Mr Ernest Clarke, who is fishing in New Zealand, disclosing privately his reasons for his action. The opinion is expressed here that Mr Clarke may now retire from racing and sell his stud. The important winners ridden by R. Lewis for Mr E. E. IN. Clarke make up a long list. In Victoria the combination was successful seven times in the Ascot Vale Stakes, three times in the Debutante Stakes, Derby and St Leger, twice in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, and once in the Caulfield Guineas. Maribyrnong Plate and Melbourne Cup. The Randwick winners included the Champagne Stakes three times. Sires’ Produce Stakes and St Leger twice, also the Derby once, while the Adelaide Cup was captured two years in succession, through the aid of Eye Glass. RACING FIXTURE. December 26—Waipukurau R.C.
