REMOVAL URGED.
Conveniences at Junction of High Street.
A movement to secure the removal of the public conveniences at the junction of High and Cashel Streets has been begun by Mr A. C. Bretherton (district manager, the Perpetual Trustees Co., Ltd.), who is acting on behalf of tenants of shops in the locality. It is expected that the Town Planning Committee will support the movement. It is pointed out by Mr Bretherton, in a circular letter, that the conveniences penalise the shopkeepers to such an extent that efforts should be made to have them removed. Not only was the structure an ugly one, but women refused to walk past it and in consequence all the shopkeepers were suffering.
It was further pointed out that women spent about 85 per cent of the money spent in shops, and the tenants were anxious to co-operate in improving the region and to make it attractive in order to assist the shopkeepers to obtain relief from their difficulties; that the conveniences were responsible for those difficulties.
“ We are prepared to subscribe £250 as a donation to the city towards the cost of removing the offending structure, the only condition being that the removal is commenced within three months. It is necessary to raise £SOO, as we believe a subscription of that amount would be effective in winning the sympathy of the City Council.” The letters concluded by asking for a subscription. It is understood that those acting in the matter have received very gratifying support to their appeal for subscriptions
