NOT PENALISED

Relief Workers With Good Gardens.

A definite assurance thaf it is not the policy of the Labour Department to penalise relief workers in any way because they have plenty of vegetables or because of work done in their home gardens, has been given to the Garden Allotments Committee by the actingofficer in charge of the department.

The committee drew the attention of the department to a statement made to the committee that inspectors from the department visiting relief workers' homes were reducing the amount of the ration orders, the reason being that the men had plenty of vegetables in their gardens. The committee expressed some concern at this statement, as it had undertaken its work at the request of the Unemployment Board to assist relief workers to cultivate their gardens, and it asked if the statement were correct.
