PILLION RIDING.

Proposal to Impose Ban is Defeated. A proposal to recommend to the Minister of Transport that the practice of pillion riding be prohibited was defeated at the meeting of the City Council last night. The motion was brought forward by Councillor T. Andrews in view of the number of accidents, some of which had been fatal. I am assured by experts that pillion riding is no more risky than solo riding,” declared Councillor T. Milliken. “ Most of the accidents are caused through speeding, which should be controlled more strictly. ’’ Councillor J. K. Archer said that the matter had been gone into exhaustively by the council some years ago, as a result of which it was ascertained that the number of accidents in which motor-cycles and pillion riders were involved was proportionately smaller than with motor-cars. At that time various improvements to ensure safer riding were introduced.
