SHOPKEEPERS COMPLAIN.
Delay in Completion of Road Reconstruction. The road renewal work in Manchester Street, between Worcester Street and Oxford Terrace, will be completed fully a week before Christmas, according to a statement by the chairman of the Works Committee of the City Council (Councillor J. W. Be&nland) at the meeting of the council last night. He said that delays had occurred through the necessity for lowering of the gas main and the laying of another electric cable. Councillor Beanland’s statement was made in reply to a protest from thirty-two tenants of premises in Manchester Street, who objected to any further work being done before Christmas, as the obstruction to the footpaths and roadway had a very detrimental effect upon business. Following Councillor Beanland's statement, the matter was referred to the Works Committee for sympathetic consideration and with power to act.
