The Situation in the Far East. JAPANESE ADVANCE. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 4, 11 a.m.) SHANGHAI. May 3. With the Japanese advance on Dolonnor. the situation in the Far East is reported to be more critical. The Japanese troops are advancing upon Taliangtokow, between Dolonnor and Kuyuan, where Shansi forces are reported to be erecting defences. It is believed that the invaders intend pressing towards Kalgan, with the capture of Charhar as part of the Japanese scheme.
Dolonnor, or Chao-Naiman-Sume, is a city of Mongolia, 145 miles north by west of Pekin. The principle edifices are the Buddhist temples, which are numerous. The population totals above 30.000. Kalgan is in the province of j’Chi-li, 125 miles north-west of Pekin, and near the Great Wall. It is very populous, and is divided by a river into Mongolian and Chinese towns, both of which are fortified. It is an important post in the Siberian caravan route.
