DANIEL AND A LIONESS.

Incident at a Country Fair. . r LONDON. April 27. lltt,e spotted mongrel vanquished a lioness which escaped from a fair at Bedford and strolled across the grounds crowded with more than 1000 adults and children who fled screaming.

A bill-sticker, Arthur Bedder, was quietly pasting up posters when he felt a hot breath on his neck and turning, he saw the lioness, and instinctively struck her across the open mouth with his paste-brush, flung the paste pail at her and dashed for safety into the nearest van. The lioness, appreciating the taste of the paste, stopped to clean out the pail before resuming her stroll.

Meanwhile, a mongrel, Daniel, sighted her, and barked menacingly. The lioness bolted with Daniel in pursuit snapping at her heels and tail until she crawled for refuge beneath the steam engine working the roundabout. Daniel, knowingly wagging his tail, trotted to the proprietor and watched while the lioness was lassoed and hauled into her cage.
