Sutcliffe, the English test cricketer, made his appearance here to-day in the annual Social Clubs’ match, Poverty Bay versus Wairoa. He delighted a large gathering with two innings of 56 and 136. Outstanding features of the display were the wonderful placing and the extraordinary pace in running between wickets. Playing in the morning for Poverty Bay the Yorkshireman opened quietly but was entirely at ease, picking up runs mainly with taps through covers and perfectly timed square and late cutting. No arrangement of the field could check the scoring. He seemed able to find the smallest gap. Later he unleashed excellent straight driving. His footwork was perfect. Every stroke found him getting right over the ball in a manner which was a real object lesson. His 56 included six boundaries.
Batting in the afternoon for Wairoa, after another quiet start he settled down to punishing cricket with drives and late cuts predominating. When in the eighties he became especially forceful and ran to his century with a six over the long off boundary, following with another six next ball. The next over he hit four and two sixes off successive balls, but soon after was bowled in attempting to force practically a long hop to the leg side. His 136 included four sixes and twelve fours, made in about eighty minutes. He leaves for Wellington on Sunday. Bonuses to Cricketers.
