CITY ROADING SCHEME.

Preliminary Work in Manchester Street.

Preliminary work in connection with the reconstruction of Manchester Street has already been started, and it is anticipated that within a fortnight a commencement will be made with the paving programme.

Discussing the scheme to remove the tram tracks from Manchester Street and to reconstruct the street, the chairman of the Works Committee of the City Council, Mr J. W. Beanland, stated this morning that the council had about sixteen men working on making alterations to the mains in the street at the present time. Within a fortnight it was hoped to start the concreting of the street.

lhe council must, however, retain sufficient money out of the loan to do the piece of road from Cathedral Square to Armagh Street, in Colombo Street. That work could not be done at the present time, but it was anticipated that there would be sufficient funds after making the allocation for it, to 'complete the work in Manchester Street. After a fortnight had elapsed a further 25 to 30 men would be employed on Manchester Street, which it wa shoped to have completed by the end of April.
