FIREMEN’S CONTEST.

Sumner Brigade Beats New Brighton. The annual inter-seaside fire brigade contest between the Sumner, Lyttelton and New Brighton brigades was held at St Leonards Square, Sumner, on Saturday afternoon. In spite of unfavourable weather conditions there was a large number of spectators. The Hall Cup, for the one-man coupling event, was won by Sumner, who also Avon the cup presented by Lieutenant Jones, of Lyttelton, for the highest aggregate points. Sumner also won the inter-borough contest against New Brighton. The Mayor of Sumner (Mr W. H. Nicholson) welcomed the visitors. Results were as follows: ONE-MAN COUPLING. Sumner (50 l-ssec) 1 Lyttelton (51 l-ssec) .... 2 New Brighton (52sec) 3 TWO-MEN DISABLED. New Brighton (39 l-ssec) 1 Sumner (39 2-ssec) 2 Lyttelton (41sec) 3 THREE-MEN STRAIGHT. Sumner A (34sec) ... 1 Sumner B (37sec) 2 Lyttelton (40sec) 3 FIVE-MEN FLAT. Sumner (40 l-ssee) 1 Lyttelton (42 2-ssee) .... 2 The officials were: Timekeepers, Superintendent Geo. Harper, Fireman H. Ltiblow and Fireman H. Cockle; starter, Mr S. Hood; examiners, Foreman J. R. Williams and ex-Superinten-dent W. Sherwood; disc judge, Fireman J. Lardner; ground marshal, Branchman W. Carter; judge, ex-Deputy-Superintendent W. Juriss. In the e\'ening the visitors were entertained at a smoke concert. The Superintendent of the Sumner Volunteer Brigade (Mr G. Harper) presided. He welcomed the visitors and thanked them for making the contest a success. He also thanked the performers for their services. Superintendent Carson (Lyttelton) returned thanks on behalf of the visitors. The toast list was as follows: “The King,’’ “Canterbury ProA’incial Fire Brigades’ Association,” “The Officials,” “The Visitors” and “ The Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade.” Items wore giA’en by Messrs Cummings, Moran, Lawrence, Terrell, Woods and Connor and Fireman J. Lardner.
