Opening of Broadsiding at Dunedin. AUSTRALIANS IN ACTION. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, December 13. The Speedway Royle held its opening meeting in Dunedin last night before a good crowd. The big attraction was the appearance of four Australian riders, Packer, Bysouth, Elms and Tompkins, all of whom immediately showed themselves to he clever broadsiders. Tompkins in his very first race made himself a favourite with the crowd, taking tremendous slides on the corners, but he crashed heavily in the third heat of the Australian Match Race and Avas unable to i*ide during the rest of the evening. The other two Australians in the race, Elms and Packer, seeing Tompkins’s danger, threw themselves from their machines to avoid crashing into him, their action making a great impression on the crowd. Visiting Riders Handicapped at Western Springs. AUCKLAND, December 13. Persistent machine trouble marred the performances of visiting riders at the Western Springs SpeedAvay last evening. Although the local men were in good form, both J. Jackson and N. Key, of England, won several places, but were handicapped by their motors being unreliable, while E. Whittle, of Australia, also had difficulty with his mount. There were very few falls and, although the state of the track made speeds slower than on the opening night, the racing was good.
