ROUND THE SUBURBS.
South Brighton Progress League. The monthly meeting of the South Brighton Progress League was held in the Bridge Street Hall last evening. The president (Mr A. E. Lawry) was in the chair. The secretary- was instructed to have plans prepared for a proposed band rotunda in the Pleasant Point Domain. It was decided to write to the New Brighton Borough Council, drawing attention to the state of the slides at the Pleasant Point Domain, and also asking when the gates could be erected at the Jellicoe Street Reserve. On the motion of Mr Hulme it was decided to write to the South Brighton Surf Club, expressing regret that the league could not take any official part in the club’s gala in November. R.S.A. Branch Formed. A well-attended meeting of returned soldiers was held in the Pier Hall, New Brighton, last evening. The president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association, the Rev F. T. Read, was in the chair, and with him were Messrs E. F. Willcox (secretary-), and A. L. Emmerson and E. G. Queree, members of the executive. Mr Willcox urged the men to join up with the association. Some time ago the ass Deration had offered a subsidy to the New Brighton Borough Council for the em ployment of returned men. The subI sidy had not been accepted, but was still available. It was decided to form a sub-branch of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association in New Brighton, and the following were appointed as a committee to arrange for the establishment cf the branch: Messrs A. Burgess (convener). W. J. Palmer, 11. M. Hall. D. Burney- and R. Blackett. Linwood Avenue. Work is proceeding apace in Linwood Avenue under the No. 5 scheme. The area is being levelled as far as Tilford Street, and has been planted in trees. Further planting will be carried out within a few days, and the men are digging the holes ready. This work, which has been put in hand through the efforts of the East Linwood and Woolston Progressive Association, is much appreciated by- residents of the district. Levelling is also being carried out between Hargood Road and John Street.
