ASHBURTON NEWS.

Presentation Made to Mission Workers. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, August 14. Mr J. Beck, who is leaving to take up work in the mission field, was entertained at a farewell social held under the auspices of the China Inland Mission Committee in the Baptist Church. The Rev Mr Irvine presided and speakers were the Rev Mr Batts, on behalf of the church, Mr T. N. Gibbs (Christchurch), for the China Inland Mission Committee, and Mr K. 11. Fountain, of the Bible Training Institute. On behalf of the church, Mr R. 11. Loy presented Mr Beck with a travelling rug and wished him success in his work. Anthems were sung by the choir. Lodge Meetings. The N.G. (Brother W. K. Waters) presided over a meeting of the Loyal Ashburton Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., held laist evening. Sick pay amounting to £2O 5s was passed in favour of twenty members. An invitation to attend the Waterton Lodge jubilee meeting on Saturday, August 22, was accepted. One member was initiated, and one proposed. Brother G. Evans, N.G., presided over a good attendance at a meeting of the Hakatere Lodge. No. 68, 1.0.0. F., held last evening, when six members were reported to be on the sick list. One candidate was initiated into the Order. Two maternity claims were passed for payment. It was decided that next lodge meeting would take the form of an old members’ night. Women’s Institute. The first meeting of the Hampstead Women’s, Institute was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs B. Coward presiding. Mrs Knight wrote that owing to an accident she was forced to resign the presidency, and Mrs Coward was appointed in her place. The secretary (Mrs W. Bramley) also resigned, and Mrs W. J. Miller was appointed to the vacancy. Miss O. Tinker was appointed treasurer. Miss Bacon gave a demonstration on the making of sengrass stools. It was decided that next meeting take the form of a “ bring and buy ” afternoon to raise funds. Mesdames E. 11. Childs, T. Hunt, M’Crea and J. Hunt were hostesses for the afternoon. Golf Representatives. The following will play for the Ashburton Golf Club against Timaru at Ashburton .to-morrow : J. T. Smith, R. B. Lambert, E. A. Cockroft, B. M’Sherry, R. M’Gregor, W. Hedges, C. N. Thompson, S. J. Thomas, 11. G. Kemp, H. N. Lewis, D. A. Lawson, 11. G. Ferrier, M. MacMillan, G. d’Auvergne, F. W. Watt and L. J. Watt. Magistrate’s Court. In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday judgment by default was given in the following undefended civil cases: W. H. Collins and Co.. Ltd. v. A. M’Kay £lO 17s 9d, costs £3 10s; L. S. Hopkins v. James Hunt £l, costs Ss: W. H. Collins and Co. v. A. Cummerfield £1 8s 3d. costs 8s; C. K. K. Thomas v. A. M’Kay £B4 14s 3d, costs £5 4s. Joseph Wesley proceeded against N. R. Nordstrum for an amount of £SO 8s 3d being wages alleged to be due. Plaintiff in evidence said that he was engaged at the union rate of wages £4 17s 6d per week in connection with the carting of grain by defendant’s motor lorries. He had written for his wages but received no reply. He denied that he went only occasionally for rides on the lorry.

Defendant stated that plaintiff had never been employed by him. Wesley came into the yard several times and asked if he could go for a ride on the lorries to Mayfield. The lorries had always been in the charge of a man employed by the defendant. The Magistrate held that there was no proof of an agreement regarding employment and non-suited the plaintiff. Application for discharge of a separation order was made by William Thomas Angus, in respect of his wife. Applicant was represented by Mr C. G. Drury and Mrs Angus by Mr R. Kennedy. After hearing evidence of both parties, that of Mrs Angus being a complete denial of that given applicant, the Magistrate reserved his decision.
