GERALDINE NEWS.

A report submitted at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine Borough Council showed a debit of £950 after the month’s payments had been made. There were present—The Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald) and Councillors Lack, Logan, Campbell, G. H. Patrick, J. Miller and M’Clure. Councillor Lack referred to the indisposition of their late Mayor (Mr J. Kennedy) and a motion expressing sympathy combined with hope for his speedy recovery was adopted. The Geraldine County Council wrote intimating its readiness to contribute £25, half the estimated cost of installing hydrants for the protection of the native bush, and it was agreed to thank the County Council. Reports showed that the ranger had impounded five cows during the month. The librarian had issued 976 books.' No infectious disease had been notified. The Sports Committee was granted use of the Domain on September 12 for the seven-a-side Rugby tournament. Other bookings were :—The Hockey Association, on August 27, for its annual tournament, and the South Canterbury Federation of Women, on December 6, for a country dancing competition. Hockey Match. In the match Married v. Single, played on Thursday, each side scored two

goals. The scorers were: Married, C. Knight and L. Bennington; Single, J. Buckley and P. M’Shane. Presentations Made. On Thursday afternoon the Rev E. N. Blakiston and Mrs Blakiston left Geraldine for Christchurch, where they are going to make their home. People from all parts of the parish met, when the vicar (the Rev J. F. Coursey) and the people’s warden (Mr R. H. Orbell) spoke highly of his work. Mr Blakiston was presented with a cheque. After service at the Presbyterian Church Colonel Mackenzie made a presentation to Miss E. Sherratt as a mark of the appreciation by the congregatoin of her services as organist during a number of years. Badminton Season. On Thursday afternoon the Badminton Club opened its season in fine weather on their courts at Wynwood, Raukapuka, when there w ? as a very fair attendance.
