NATIONAL WEEK VISITORS
Numbers Much the Same as in Previous Years. In spite of the financial position and decreased business on the totalisator, it is reported from hotels that the number of visitors for National Week is much the same as in previous years. Most of the hotels are said to be full, and one proprietor stated that business was better than was expected, as his house was full and people were staying longer than in the past. The increased numbers for the holiday period are welcome, for few people have been travelling in the last few months and business has been slack in the hotel line. Another hotel proprietor stated that in his house business was not quite as brisk as in National Week in previous years. It was not bad, however, he added, although there were fewer travellers from the North Island. The tramway takings for the holiday period are not yet available, but the train traffic has fallen off. On Thursday rail traffic to Riccarton consisted of seventy-seven first-class and 425 second-class passengers. For the same day last year the corresponding figures were 169 and 547.
