Cost of School Books.

To th© Editor.

Dear Sir, —There is one direction in which economies could be effected in our Education Department, and that is in the expense falling on the family man in the matter of school books. There are many printers in New Zealand who have the facilities for printing and publishing the books that are used in our schools. I have made inquiries of local printers, and they inform me that the books could be printed and sold at much less than the prices now charged. One factor in the maintenance of high prices for school books is the private ownership of copyright. This is a matter that should be controlled by the Education Department. With the copyright in its possession, competitive prices could be obtained for the printing of the books, and the children could obtain their books at less cost than at present.—l am, etc., PARENT.
