ART EXHIBITION.
Fine Landscapes by Mr Mvrcu s Clark. The exhibition of paintings by the Wellington artist, Mr Marcus Clark, at the shop of Mr Fisher, in High Street, cannot fail to interest the artistic circle of Christchurch. Mr Clark has built up a fine reputation with his landscape work, and the pictures at present on show must add to his prestige. Mr Clark sees much beauty in his subjects, and never fails in the task of portrayal. A feature of the present display is that Mr Clark has brought his prices into line with the decreased income of the community. He is perhaps the first artist in the Dominion to take this definite step. In most of his pictures just now the quality is far and away abo\*e what the price would suggest. There is a brilliance about Mr Clark’s work which attracts everyone, yet the connoisseur cannot pick fault with his technique, nor can anyone justly claim that his conceptions are exaggerated. A sound artistry gives depth and conviction to his brilliant colourings and sunlit subjects, movement and depth to the pictured seas and rivers, life to his trees and clouds. The trees in these pictures are particularly well treated, but there is no departure of the landscape painter’s art that is without the scope of Mr Clark’s facile brush. Many local artists have already visited the exhibition, and their comment is most congratulatory.
