MEETING OF W.C.T.U.

The fortnightly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the W.C.T.U. was was held on Wednesday. Miss Henderson presided. Votes of sympathy were passed to the members of the Worldwide W.C.T.U. Executive Council in the death of their late president, Miss Anna Gordon, and also to the relatives of Mrs Williams, late of Linwood, who had been an enthusiastic worker for the cause. The president extended a welcome to Miss Blackwell, who was present after a long absence through illness, also to visiting members from the Ashburton union. Reference to the birthdays of two senior members, Mesdames Israelsen and Pedler, was made by the president, who offered congratulations and good wishes. She also paid a tribute to their long service for the union. On behalf of the union, Miss Henderson presented the guests with posies of violets and freesias. Afternoon tea was served, a feature being a beautifully iced cake decorated with twelve candles, conveying the wish for twelve prosperous months. During the afternoon, a pianoforte solo was given by Miss M. M. Stephens, and songs were rendered by Mesdames Harper and Gallop, and a recitation was given by Mrs Pedler. Miss Stephens was accompanist.
