WAIMAKARIRI FALLING.

Greatest Rise Above Normal was 6ft Gin.

Heavy rain, brought on by the nor’wester of yesterday, and the thaw which accompanied it, caused an appreciable rise in the level of the Waimakariri River. The river rose steadily all last evening, and a maximum rise of 6ft 6in above normal was recorded at White’s Bridge, near the construction camp. The river fell rapidly, however, and at mid-day to-day was only a foot above normal. The latest report from the foot of the gorge, at Oxford, states that the river made a total rise of two feet, but it was falling rapidly.
