A Matter of Courtesy.

To the Editor. Dear Sir,—l would like to draw your attention to a little act of unkindliness on the part of a local carter when delivering coal at the homes of poor people. I happened to be visiting a home yesterday when the Coal and Blanket Fund coal carter called with some coal, and heard him shout out and announce the fact that i- was the Coal and Blanket Fund for all to hear. This sort of untactful behaviour is hurtful indeed to the dear old people who recei\e the coal. These dear old souls are sensitive on this matter, and do not want the kindness broadcast. It is bad enough to be in want without having' to be reminded of the fact by a carter, whose duty it i* to deliver the coal without this sort of comment, which is quite unnecessary. No doubt it is lack of thought, but in any case it ought to be remedied and the dear old souls saved this unpleasantness which, you will agree, is quite reasonable. —I am, etc, SYMPATHY. The contractor for the supply of coal for the Coal and Blanket Fund states that the firm’s carters are instructed not to announce the fact that coal is being delivered on behalf of the fund. All that they have to do is to secure a signature to the waybill which states that the coal is from the Coal and Blanket Fund. “We do our utmost to help the fund, and any indiscretion on the part of one of our men is a great worry to us,” he added. If we find out who is referred to by the correspondent that man will be dealt with by the firm.” —Ed. “ Star.”
