WELL KNOWN SPORTS MASTER NOW RETIRED.

One of the best known sportsmen of the teaching profession, Mr C. J. Gold, stone, retired from active work yesterday. For the past twenty years Mr Goldstone, who has been teaching for forty-three 3 r ears altogether, has been the senior sports master at the Christchurch Technical College. A keen sport, he has combined games with work with the greatest possible success, and he will be greatly missed in both the class room and on the sporting field. Mr Goldstone joined the staff of the Technical College shortly after it had been established, and at once commenced work in forming cricket and football teams. He was very successful, and has ever since coached teams to victory. He saw the number of pupils grow from 300 to nearly 1000. and his work on the sporting field increased also, but he gave up nearly all his spare time to furthering the interests of the college out of doors. Before he came to the Technical College he was a teacher at schools at Pleasant Point. Waimate, Temuka, Waitohi, and Woolston. Mr Goldstone’s own performances in all classes of sport have been outstanding. At bowls he was singles champion

of New Zealand in 1908 and in tha same year was one of the runners-up in the champion rinks and fourth in the doubles champion. In 1922, with a partner, he won the champion of champions doubles tournament. He has represented South Canterbury at both cricket and football, and in 1903 played for South Canterbury against Lord Hawke’s team of English cricketers who toured New Zealand. For eight years Mr Goldstone has selected the Colts’ team which plays against the Ellesmere representatives each Labour Day, and six of the men whom he has selected have since played for New Zealand. He was also a junior selector for the Canterbury Rugby Union for five 3'ears.
