FREE AMBULANCE AND LOCAL BODY LEVIES.

A plea for public support for the St John Ambulance Association was made by Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, at the presentation of the net proceeds of the " Golden Arrow ” exhibition to-day. He said that the establishment in Christchurch of any system of free ambulance such as was working in Wellington would involve substantial costs annually. Sir Heaton, as representative of the St John Ambulance Association at the gathering, said that the Wellington < ity Council granted £SOO annually to the free ambulance, compared with £SO to the St John Ambulance from the ( hr-Vt-church City Council. The Wellington Hospital Board gave £IOOO. and th •• North Canterbury Board gave £125. The local bodies in Wellington voted not less than £2OOO.

“ On £2OOO alone we could maintain a very efficient service, stated Sir Heaton. “ The only income that the St John Association in Christchurch has are these small annual grants, the annual collection, and donations from public-*pirited citiiens. We have been told that the St John ambulance was not a free one. It has always been free to those who cannot afford to pay."
