MR THOMAS DECLINES TO ANSWER A QUESTION.
(Received March 31, noon.) LONDON, March 30. In the House of Commons Sir H. O’Neil asked Mr Thomas: “ Can you give an assurance that if Australia shows determination—as she certainly will—to face the real facts of the situation, it will be the policy of the British Government to give the great Dominion all possible help." Mr Thomas said: “ A more undesirable question I cannot conceive. Please do remember the position, of this country and the Government. I- expressed the opinion on Friday that I could not conceive that New South Wales’s decision to repudiate their obligations would be allowed to continue. No greater mistake could be made than to associate the Commonwealth’s decision (of which I expressed appreciation) with any outside question. It would be a tragic mistake to attempt to answer this question. I am sorry, even, that such a question could be asked, because of its possible repercussions ir» other places.”
