FINEST OPAL THE WORLD HAS SEEN.
A magnificent gem FROM NEW SOUTH WALES. LONDON. March 19. Messrs Altshuler, diamond mounters, of Holborn, declare that the black opal “Queen of the World,” found at Lightning Ridge, New South Wales, is the finest in the world. Nothing like it, they say, has been seen before. It is expected to weigh 25 carats when removed from the matrix. Messrs Altshuler value the gem at £2OOO, and are resolved it shall not leave Great Britain. In June, 1925, the discovery was reported from Lightning Ridge of what was declared to be the finest opal ever won on the field. Roughly dressed, it measured 61 inches by two inches. Red. green, orange, blue, gold and almost every other known colour are blended in the specimen, making it a stone of exquisite beauty. The discovery was declared at the time to be unique in the history of the gem world.
