PUBLIC SERVICE SALARIES CUT.

SPECIAL PLEA MADE FOR HAWKE’S BAY. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, March 25. A new point emerged from the tedious discussion of the Finance Bill in committee yesterday. At 2.30 when the Committee resumed its discussion of the short title of the Finance Bill, Mr W. E. Barnard (Labour, Napier) went on with a speech interrupted early in the morning. He pleaded that public servants in the earthquake area should not suffer further loss by salary cuts. This point was supported by Mr H. M. Campbell (Hawkes Bay) who as a Reform member was heartily welcomed by Labourites for the relief he gave them in their heavy talking programme. Mr Campbell asked the Prime Minister to relieve at least the married public servants in the earthquake area of any reductions because they had suffered severe losses in their homes. This should be done for at any rate twelve months. Mr F. Langstone (Labour, Waimarino) remarked encouragingly that the speaker could get an extension of speaking time. Mr Campbell: I only want it for these men. The Prime Minister: I will be glad to consider it.
