Fires At Brighton.

To the Editor. Dear Sir, —Shouldn’t the Borough Council accept responsibility for these scrub fires? Every now and again the Toyn Clerk’s office sends property-owners a peremptory demand that sections must be cleared of lupins and other inflammatory material. And I think the “ demand ” sets out that unless the work is done by the owner the council will do the job itself and charge the owner with the cost. Nobody takes any notice. Nothing is done. Summer comes, with its picnickers and cigarette ends, and then there's a blaze in the lupins, endangering house properties from which the council collects its rates quite regularly. The time of the firemen and volunteer helpers could be saved if owners of sections were compelled to clean them up and keep them cleaned up. Before closing, I would like to compliment the New Brighton Fire Brigade members on the wa’ they tackle their job.—l am, etc., FI RE BELT.
