SOCIAL GATHERINGS
Bride-Elect Honoured. The Druids’ Hall, Woolston, was tastefully decorated on Thursday evening, when Mr and Mrs P. Leahy gave a variety evening in honour of Miss Lassie King, who is to be married shortly. Mr Leahy proposed the toast of the guest of honour, who was the recipient of many useful gifts. Mr Monte Rich suitably responded. The evening was spent in items, games and dancing. Items were given by Mrs Rich, Misses Nelson, Rich, Lanyon and Parry. Mr E. White supplied the music for dancing, Miss M. Thorne played extras and Mr Brunsden was M.C. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs Lindsay, Mr and Mrs P. J. Kelly, Mr and Mrs W. Whiting, Mr and Mrs H. E. Brunsden, Mr and Mrs P. Leahy, Mesdames F. Rich, King, Parry, Gilmore, L. Kelly and Lanyon; Misses M. Rich, L. King, C. Lindsay, M. George, M. Thorne, G. M’Gregor, J. Richard, P. Cameron, Messrs Penrose, Murphy, Munro, Laing, J. Rich, M. W. Woodham, M. C. Woodham and M. Rich. Welcome Home. On Wednesday evening the friends of Miss Adele Smith met in the Cust Public Hall to welcome her home from a trip to Europe. A very enjoyable time was spent with music, elocutionary items, dancing and competitions. On behalf of her friends, the Rev A. Simirronds and Mr John Smith welcomed the guests of the evening. Miss Pat Smith after an appropriate address handed to Miss Adele Smith a bouquet of roses. Competitions were won by Mrs Richardson, Miss M. Early, Messrs M. Leslie and M. Forbes. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mrs Chalmers and Mr H. Mackay, a Monte Carlo by Mrs Brunsden and Mr C. Briggs. Songs were given by Miss Pat Smith and recitations by Miss E. Barr. Music for dancing was provided by local musicians. Mr A. Gartery was M.Cr Presentation. On behalf of the residents of Milford district, Mr R. Lyall (chairman of the School Committee), speaking at the annual school prize-giving on Thursday evening, said that Mr and Mrs Norman Ward were leaving the district to take up their residence in Sumner (Christchurch), and as they had been valued workers, they could not allow them to leave without some recognition. He then handed to Mr Ward, for himself and Mrs Ward, several sealed packets, and expressed the hope that they would be happy and prosperous in their new home. Messrs Crossman and Dale endorsed Mr Lyall’s remarks. Mr Ward suitably replied on behalf of himself and Mrs Ward. Coming-of-age Party. Recently a pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mrs Parker, St Albans, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their eldest son, George. The evening was spent in games, dancing, competitions and musical items. The Lucky Spot was won by Miss Betty Ramble and Mr C. Trigance. The room was decorated in bright streamers, and the tables looked beautiful, in the centre of which was a large iced cake. Mr A. Pamplin presented to his cousin, George Parker, a large golden key. Mr G. Brittling suitably responded. Mr Parker was the recipient of many beautiful presents. A Farewell Party.
At the home of Mrs W. Whitaker, Montreal Street, a farewell party was held for Mrs Whitaker’s sister, Mrs S. Smith, who has since left for her home in Townsville, Queensland, after spending three months’ holiday with relations. The evening, was spent in games, singing and dancing. Those present were: Mr and Mrs W. Whitaker, Mrs H. Gilling, Mrs F. Whitaker, Mrs S. Smith, Mr and Mrs W. Lennie, Mr and Mrs W. Mitchell, Mr and Mrs L. Falgar, Mr and Mrs G. Moore, Mrs Bucks, Misses L. Wheller, R. Smith, M. O'Reillj'-, G. Lennie, P. Bechler, N. Crowe, K. O'Reilly, Messrs P. Crowe, E. Falgar, H. Taylor, D. Crowe, M. O’Reilly and J. O’Loughlin. Kitchen Evening.
At the residence of Mr and Mrs L. Harper, Randolph Street, a kitchen evening was given in honour of Miss M. Harper, whose marriage takes place shortly. A pleasant evening was spent in games, competitions and. dancing. The competitions were won by Miss L. Kinsella, Mrs L. Clarke, Mr C. Hennessy and Mr Hyde. Songs were given by Miss Kinsella and Mr Jones Among those present were:—Mr and Mrs L. Harper, Mr and Mrs Thompson, Mr and Mrs Sleeman, Mr and Mrs L. Clarke, Mrs and Miss Weir, Miss and Mrs Weston, Miss Sleeman, Mrs and Miss Tyson, Mrs Bruce, Mrs Pauling, Misses Harper (3), Mrs Clark, Miss Pullan, Miss Kinsella, Messrs C. Hennessy, A. Jones, H. Webber, Harper (3) and Hyde. The evening was brought to a close by singing “ For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.
