FAREWELL TO MISS COOK.
Miss A. J. Cook, who is retiring from the teaching profession, after ten years’ connection with the Waimairi School, was met by parents and teachers and scholars on Thursday, when they took the opportunity of expressing their very warm regard for her. At the breaking-up ceremony, which was largely attended, the head master, Mr Wilkins, and the chairman of the School Committee, Mr Haines, spoke appreciatively of Miss Cook’s unselfish, devoted service to the school. Mr Wilkins referred to the happy state of Miss Cook’s infant room, where the first steps of many a learner had been eased under her patient, kindly guidance. Two Standard VI. pupils, Marjorie Nisbet and Phyllis Moon, handed to Miss Cook the children’s gift, a dress-ing-case in pale blue and amber xylonite, and a bedroom clock to match. Mr Haines said that Miss Cook’s kindliness and her work among the children had won for her the love and the highest esteem of the committee and parents. On behalf of the committee, he presented her with a rug. Earlier in the week members of the teaching staff met at a farewell gathering, the tangible expression of their appreciation being a reading-lamp.
