SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Birthday Party. At the invitation of Mrs 11. Smith, a large number of young people assembled in St Mark’s Schoolroom, Rakaia, to celebrate the twenty-first birthday of her daughter, Olive. The schoolroom was prettily decorated with green and gold paper streamers and greenery. The evening was spent in dancing and competitions. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mr T. Lawler, and extras were played by Miss Robinson (Chertsey) and Mr J. Lawler. Mr J. Hardy was M.C. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Robinson (Chertseyu and Mr B. Hooper. Competitions were won by Messrs P. Doig and A. Smith. Mr C. Evison proposed the health of the guest of the evening. The customary. gold key was presented by Mrs Smith to her daughter. The beautiful two-tiered birthday cake was made by Mrs Watson. Miss Smith was the recipient of many presents. Surprise Party. A surprise party organised by Miss Gladys Porter visited the residence of Mr and Mrs A. Taylor. “Te Kohanga,” Marriott’s Road, North Beach, recently. An enjoyable time was spent in games, singing and competitions, the winners of the competitions being Misses D. Robinson, Mary Walker and M. Gottermeyer, and Messrs O. Taylor, B. Allen and F. Hartman. Among those present were:—Mr and Mrs A. Taylor, Mr and Mrs F. Scott, Mr and Mrs A. E. Porter, Mrs Wilkinson, Misses Gladys Porter, Muriel Porter, Ivy Congdon, Ivy Elwood, Lorna M’Donald, Doris Robinson, Ida Wilkinson, Jean Peters, Mary Walker, Ivy Wilson, Maisie Fass, Olive Mackay, Esther Mullins, Muriel Gottermeyer, Rosy Gadd, Messrs B. Porter, M. Fass, O. Lang, K, Barrie. B. Wilson, G. Clack. G.. Roberts, R. Habgood, C. Barrell, W. Withers, F. Hartman, A. Broughton, 11. Walker, 11. Squires, R. Polkinghorne, B. Allen, T. Gottermeyer, Masters Francis Scott and Lexie lor. Papanui Dance. There was a large attendance at the Young Sports Club’s social at the Papanui Buildings. Games, competitions and dancing were enjoyed. Mr L. Buckley was M.C. and Iles’s Orchestra supplied the music for the dancing. Extras were played by Mr F. Smith. The “lucky spot” was won by Miss M. Ormandy and Mr N. Macksell; the Monte Carlo by Miss O. Freeman and Mr A. A. Fantham; “musical chairs.” by Miss Monica Ormandy and Mr 11. Skidmore, and a competition by Mrs Freeman. Surprise Party. A surprise party gathered at the residence of Miss Betty Reid, Belvue Avenue, Papanui, recently. An enjoyable evening was spent in games, competitions and dancing. Those present included: Misses M. Smith, N. Sey, M. Sey, L. M’Farlane, J. M’Millan, and Messrs B. Winstone, A. Roy, W. Blunden, G. Lyndley, D. Apperley, W. Sey and G. Mitchell. Competitions were won by Messrs W. Sey and A. Roy and Miss L. M’Farlane. Young Helpers’ League Party. The Young Helpers’ League, in connection with Dr Barnado’s Homes, held, a most enjoyable party in the Addington School recently. The room was tastefully decorated with blue lupins and laburnum —the school colours. After the opening speech by the president, Mrs Robb, the following items were given:—Pianoforte solos, Rona Claridge and Gladys Jenkins; violin solo, Douglas Smith; recitations, Betty Craigie and David M’Kenzie; fairy s- dance and club swinging, Helen Boag; skipping rope dance, Shirley Streeter; mouthy-organ solo, Pat Clements; trio, Rona Claridge, Connie Snidall and Dorothy M’Kelvin. After the reports of the and treasurer, badges were presented to Helen Boag, Douglas Smith, John Hamlin, Phyllis Hamlin, Lloy’d Thomas, Edna Thomas, Albert Walker, Fred 110> r , Bert Chapman, Billy Clements and Aubrey Shaw, and silver knives to Douglas Orange and Raymond Burleyi Douglas Orange and Doreen Hannah each received a prize lor having the largest collection in their boxes. Mr Sloane, chairman of the School Committee, and Mr Campbell gave short addresses, and a happy party was brought to a close with the serving of a dainty supper and ice-creams. The box-opening, which was held a few weeks previously, resulted in a collection of £l6 13s 4d. Cabin Party. Mrs J. Davis, assisted by her daughter, Miss Estelle Davis, entertained a number of friends on Friday at a “Cabin Party’” for Mrs Gladstone Ward, who will leave in January for a trip abroad. The party was held at Mrs Davis’s home in Papanui Road, where beautiful pink antirrhinums and pink and blue lupins were effectively used to decorate the drawing-room. Ranunculi in vivid shades gave a bright note of colour to the tea-table. Mrs Ward received many useful gifts for her cabin. An interesting competition was won by Miss Enright. Mrs Davis wore a black marocain frock with vestee of beige georgette, with a pleated jabot. Miss Davis’s frock was of lettuce-green lace relieved by a posy of pink roses.
