POSTAL GUILD BRANCH FORMED AT WELLINGTON

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 29. A meeting of officers interested in the formation of a Post and Telegraph Guild was held last night for the purpose of presenting the Provincial Committee's report and electing branch officers for the y'ear. Mr M’Lean, Chief Postmaster, presided over a large attendance. A statement handed to the Press says that the total of the names received as members of the various branches formed was 1500. The Guild is open to officers with salaries of £320 and over. The Chairman ruled that the meeting was called for a specific purpose. Those who were opposed to the Guild would, he said, have full liberty to speak to the motion. This was taken full advantage of by the President and five officers of the Post and Telegraph Association. On a show of hands the motion was carried by 72 votes to 29. The need for a new body was stressed by several speakers, who referred to the Alliance of Labour incident in 1922, and it was stated by one speaker that the birth of the Guild could be dated from that incident. At strong committee was elected from all branches of the Department in Wellington.
