UNEMPLOYED WILL NOT GET THE AWARD RATES.

(Special to the ** Star.”) WELLINGTON. July 11. The City Council last night had before it a. motion from Councillor M’Keen, to pay award rate wages on standard works being carried out by loans subsidised by the Government for unemployment relief. The question was fully debated and the motion was lost. The Mayor summed up the position when he said that, if the proposal would give a solution of the unemployment problem he would support it; but it would not. It would accentuate it. It would ensure that other men would come to Wellington with the hope of getting higher wages. The voting was ten against and four for the motion.
