TIMARU NEWS.

ENGLISH COAL SHIPMENT. The Home steamer Norfolk, from Liverpool via ports, berthed at Timaru yesterday, with 516 tons of English coal for discharge. Timaru is the only New Zealand port at which the Norfolk has discharged coal. ANOTHER BIG CROWD. Caroline Bay was again invaded by excursionists yesterday, when the. picnic of the combined schools and Friendly Societies of Dunsandel, Greendale and Burnham, aggregating 1100 persons, visited the town. The day was gloriously fine and warm. HOTEL CHANGES NAME. After being known as the Hydro Grand Hotel, or more commonly as the Hydro, since its establishment, the name of Timaru’s largest private hotel has now been altered to The Grand. LOCAL ASSESSOR APPOINTED. Mr F. J. Bastings, restaurant proprietor, of Timaru, has been appointed assessor of tea rooms and restaurants in the smaller towns and country districts of the South Island. Mr Bastings will be visiting Wellington next week in connection with a Conciliation Council meeting. NEW LOCAL ORGANISATION. A representative and enthusiastic gathering of farmers’ wives and the farming community generally met in the C.F.C.A. yesterday and decided to form a South Canterbury branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmert’ Union. The gathering was addressed by Mrs C. C. Jackson, Dominion president of the Women’s Division, who outlined the aims and objects.
