OFFENCE IS SERIOUS, SAYS MAGISTRATE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 7. Charles Henry Whitehead, aged 29, a labourer, was fined £lO with the alternative of one month’s gaol by Mr Hunt. S.M., for posing as a detective. The police stated that two men entered a Chinese shop last night. The accused stated that they were sent by the Chief Detective to see if there was any gambling or opium smoking. One of the Chinese became suspicious and telephoned to the police headquarters. When the police arrived the two men had (disappeared, but Whitehead was arrested later. The accused said that he was the worse for liquor and that the affair was only joke. The Magistrate said that the offence was a very serious one and drunkenness was no excuse.
