LINWOOD SWIMMERS OPEN SEASON TO-DAY.

In dull, cold weather, some of the ninety-two members of the Linwood Swimming Club, mostly girls, took the opening plunge of the season this afternoon. In addition to novelty events byclub members, a demonstration of liresaving and resuscitation was given by a. squad of two from the Girls High School, under • the control of Miss B. Buxton. Miss Buxton also gave an exhibition of many styles of fancy swimming. A diversion was created by . a burlesque on a rescue from drowning by means of a life-saving reel. F. Thorne, L. Brown and S. Anderson staged the comedy. .. In declaring the season open, the president of the club (Mr A. B. Diehl) regretted, the coldness of the afternoon, and praised those younger members who had braved the elements, including the water, in costume. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M P had been requested to declare the season open, but Parliamentary duties prevented Jiis attendance. The president appealed to the residents for more support for the club. At the conclusion of the programme the prizes were presented by the head master of the Linwood School (Mr W. Rodger), who said that if Miss Buxton’s services as a life-saving coach for the school could be secured, much benefit would accrue to swimmers. The following were the results of the Cigarette Race—C.
