Brighton Breezes

PUBLICITY. In connection with the filming of New Brighton for publicity purposes, the Mayor (Mr J. H. Shaw) has wired to Wellington to know at what date this will be done. NEW BRIGHTON LINKS. A meeting of the advisory committee of the New Brighton Municipal Golf Links was held on Monday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr J. H. Shaw) presided. A suitable site for the pavilion on a knoll near where the eighteenth hole will be in the south-western corner of the course was chosen. Further tenders are to be called for the erection ofc the pavilion. Mr Fred Close, who had been acting custodian, was appointed custodian. A report from the secretary (Mr T. Middleton) stated that £IOO had been collected in fees. All decisions arrived at by the committee will be submitted to the Christchurch City Council and the Rawhiti Domain Board for their approval. SOCIAL. On Tuesday evening St Faith’s Hall was well filled for the Parish Festival Social. The vicar extended a warm welcome to those present. Songs were sung by Mrs H. Ansley and Miss Ward, the Girls’ Club, trained by Miss Clark, danced several old English folk dances, and two plays were read by Misses Smyth and Norris. An amusing competition was won by Mrs Barnes. ST FAITH’S CHURCH. The annual festival services of the St Faith’s Church, New Brighton, were held on Sunday last. There were large congregations throughout the day. The Bishop of Christchurch, assisted by the Rev J. Smythe, celebrated and preached at 11 a.m., taking as his text, “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, to-day and for ever”. The Bishop also celebrated at the 8 ajji. service, owing to the indisposition of the vicar. In the evening the Rev 11. W. Smith gave an impressive sermon on the Church as the home of the people. The anthem was, “How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings Fair” by Spohr. PLUNKET FUNDS AFTERNOON. Mrs Neil M’Gillivray, president of the New Brighton Plunket Society, has instituted a delightful but practicable scheme of raising money for the ever needy funds of the society. On Thursday afternoon at her home in Osborne Terrace about twenty-five guests of North Beach and others gathered to
play flag five hundred. The billiards and reception rooms were charmingly arranged with flowers from the hostess’s own garden. After an hour’s play afternoon tea was served. Play was again resumed, the winners being the Mayoress (Mrs J. H. ShawK Mesdames R. Pearson, Parry and Burn. WHIST EVENING. A very enjoyable whist evening was held at Mrs Bellamy’s on Tuesday, to help augment the funds for the South Brighton Croquet Club. Prizes were won by Mrs Wilkerson and Mrs Gray. NEW BRIGHTON PLUNKET SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the New Brighton Plunket Society was held at the society’s rooms on Monday. Present: Mesdames N. M’Gillivray (in the chair), R. Pearson, H. Throp, Lawrence, Flavel, Bielby, E. Empson and Miss E. Hulme (honorary secretary). Mrs Bargrove’s resignation from the committee was accepted with regret. The nurse’s report was read as follows: 109 adults, 81 babies, 20 children: North Beach, 15 children; home visits, 95. SOUTH BRIGHTON CROQUET CLUB. The usual weekly card evening was held at Miss Skipworth’s on Thursday evening last, when prizes were won by Mrs Weavers, Mrs Hunt and Miss Hunt. PERSONAL. Mr 11. Thornley, ‘manager of the Australasian Loan Co., Wellington, and his wife and daughter are staying with Mr and Mrs 11. Robinson, at 254, Estuar> Road, for a few days before returning to Wellington.
MUNICIPAL BAND. The New Brighton Municipal Band will play the following programme at the New Brighton Band Rotunda on Sunday: March, “March of the Anzacs”; waltz, “Just Like Darby and Joan”; selection, “Saxonhurst”; foxtrots, “Saskatchewan” and “Ice Cream”; idyll, “The Cuckoos”; trombone novelty, “Sliding Jim”; two-step, “Dada Dada”; march, “Duntroon”. SURPRISE PARTY. An enjoyable evening was spent recently at the Methodist parsonage, New Brighton, when the boys and girls whom Mrs Peam coached for the Sunday school examinations took a surprise party to her place for the purpose of giving her a small token, of their esteem. On behalf of the students, Miss Elsie Heal presented Mrs Pearn with a crystal cruet, Mrs Pearn suitably responding, after which the evening was spent in competitions and games. Those present were: Mrs Pearn, Misses Nova Sutton, Alice Good, Elsie Heal, Helen Bright, Dorothy Carmalt, Hazel Williams, Mavis Wright, Joan Head, Muriel Hulme, Rose Lumberg, Nellie Rogers, Ida Gott, and Messrs B. Moody, R. Hounsell, E. Scott, R. Paddy, A. Jones, D. Turner and R. Hooker. NORTH BEACH NOTES. A surprise party was held at the home of Mr and Mrs H. Roscoe, Saltaire Street, recently. An enjoyable evening was spent at cards, the winners being Mesdames Forester. R. Parker, and Hill while the consolation prize went to Mrs S. Brown. Among those present were: Mesdames H. Roscoe, M’Laughlan, Wakefield (Sydenham), Hubber (Sydney), Hill, Passmore, R. Parker, Tait, S. Brown, Messrs Roscoe, M’Laughlan, J. Roscoe, C. Roscoe, Hill, S. Brown, Passmore, G. Passmore, Misses Marrion Forrester, Lily Passmore. CARNIVAL CONCERT. In support of the candidature of Miss Betty Florance, North Beach Queen at the Carnival inaugurated by St Faith’s Anglican Church, a concert, organised by Mrs Betty Sneesby, was held in the North Beach Memorial Hall on Thursday evening. The pupils of Miss Dorothy White’s School of Dancing contributed several ballets and a chorus number was given by the North Brighton School children. Items were also given by: Mrs Betty Sneesby, Misses Norah Weston, M. Lee, A. Merrin, P Merrin, Edna Gray, Gladys Sedgley, Nell Merrin, Billie Stevens, Messrs Alan Dalton, Harold Instone and Henry Brooks. During the interval an appeal for pennies was made by Messrs Brooks and Instone and was generously responded to. The accompanists were Mrs Phyllis Eames, Miss Amy Peters. At the conclusion of the concert a dance was held, the music being provided by Miss Dulde Hull. TEMPERANCE UNION. The North Brighton Young People’s Christian Temperance Union held its monthly meeting at Mrs Eames’ heme on Monday evening; Mrs A. H. Henry presiding over a fair attendance of members. Messrs Gus Florance and S. Dalling were elected as joint superintendent of the Scientific Temperance Department. A report of the proceedings of the recent Provincial Convention of the W.C.T.U. held at Waimate was given by Mrs Lowry.
