Shirley-St Albans Notes.
ST ALBANS PUBLIC LIBRARY. The St Albans Library Committee held its usual monthly meeting on Monday night, the president, Mr A. Knight, presiding over the following: Mesdames D. Sandman, Lockwood, Angus and Hubble, Misses Peers and Gillanders and Messrs J. Jowsey, L. B. Freeman, W. H. Day, G. T. Hillsdon, L. Boot, W. H. Ford, S. Forbes, F. Prouting, W. Pearce, J. Gagliardi, H. Allen, W. Earwaker, A. E. Harper, W. Ludbrook, and H. E. Powell (hon sec). Correspondence was received from Mr H. Holland, M.P., and his Worship the Mayor, thanking the subscribers for electing them vice-presidents. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs A. E. Harper, J. W. Beanland and J. Lorimer for gifts to the library. It was decided to open the library at 7.30 pm. to 8.30 p.m. from Monday next to March 31, 1930, and that all new books be placed on the shelves immediately they are catalogued. ST ALBANS CRICKET CLUB* (Suburban Association.) The local cricket club opened the cricket season last Saturday by a scratch game among the members, two full teams taking part. If the same keenness is displayed among the members this season as was the case during the last two seasons, the teams should be near the top of the list in the competitions. Two teams have been entered in the Suburban Cricket Association's Senior B and Junior A competitions. ST ALBANS LIBRARY SOCIAL ROOM. A meeting of the committee of the Social Room was held on Thursday night. The president, Mr A. Knight, presiding over the following: Messrs J. Jowsey, H. J. West, G .T. Hillsdon, W. i H. Day, J. Gagliardi, J. C. Benge and H. E. Powell (hon sec). Mr H. J. West was appointed superintendent of the social room, and the following were ! appointed officers in charge on the nights the room was open: Messrs H. J. West, W. H. Day, G. T. Hillsdon, and J. C. Benge. The matter of fresh tournaments and challenges was left over until the winter months. ST ALBANS SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the St Albans School Committee was held on Monday last, present: Messrs W. W. Newman (chairman), E. H. B. Pearcey, J. Erasmusen, W. J. Chaplin, A. Thompson, F. Brierley, T. Condliife. E. Bilcliffe (hon sceretary). The headmaster in presenting his report, stated that the number on the main roll was 505, and on the infant roll 207. The school baths will be ready for use within the next fortnight. The fancy dress carnival for children will be held in the school grounds on Saturday next, at 2.30 p.m. and will be followed by a fancy dress dance in the evening for adults. Numerous prizes will be awarded in the various sections. RECHABITE TENT. On W’ednesday evening, at St Matthew’s Schoolroom. a well-attended meeting of the Ark of Refuge Tent,. I. was held. The Chief Ruler extended a cordial welcome to members of the Pride of Christchurch and Riccarton Tents, who paid a fraternal visit. Three claims for sick pay were sanctioned. Brothers A. D. Hassell and L. E. Waldron were elected delegates to the Provincial the annual meeting of which will be held at Timaru on Labour Day % The secretary presented a financial statement in regard to the anniversary social, which was adopted, and a vote of thanks was accorded the sisters who had charge of the refreshments, and those who had contributed items to the musical programme. Notifications were received of functions to be held at Linwood and Riccarton, and an invitation to pay a visit to the Addington Tent on November 5. Reports were presented that visits paid to the Loyal Benevolent Lodge of Oddfellows and the Philipson Tent had been very satisfactory. Responses on behalf of the sisters were made by Sister Hastings, Brother C. H. Bascand and Brother A. C. Revel!. SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY To-morrow will be a big day at the Rugby Street Methodist Church on the occasion of a celebration of the anniversary of the Sunday School. The preachers for the occasion will be the Rev F. B. Lawrence, Rev G. I. Laurenson and the Rev Leslie B. Neale.
The scholars have been specially trained by Mr F. H. Christian, and a fine musical programme, will be presented at each of the three services.
SHIRLEY SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the usual monthly meeting of the Shirley School Committee there were present-—Messrs Thompson (chairman), Finney, Clothier, Anderson, Burson and Mrs M’Kay. The head master’s report stated that the average attendance for the past month was 625, the roll number being 694, and that the handwork exhibition would be held on October 31. The visiting committee appointed for the month were Messrs Burson and Clothier.
! RICHMOND SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the meeting of the Richmond School Committee the following were present:—Messrs J. Stuart (chairman), R. A. Campbell, J. Petrie, W. Macbrayne, I. Fraser, M. Sheppard, J. Mills and W. H. Simpson (secretary). A letter was received from the School Committees’ Association advising that the school committees had been unanimously in favour of retaining the term holidays in August as at present. An invitation was received inviting members to visit the open-air school at Oxford on October 12. The secretary was instructed to write thanking Mr Pedler for the gift of a weeping elm tree and for planting same.
A letter was received from the Education Board stating that the Hon Minister of Education agreed that an assembly hall was desirable, but as funds were not available he regretted that it was not possible to approve a subsidy for this purpose. A letter was received from the East Christchurch School Committee, stating that the following operations had been completed for the month of August at the dental clinic:—Amalgam fillings 152, extractions 68, minor 59, total 279. It was decided to ask Mr Sullivan, M.P., to make arrangements with the Hon Minister of Education to meet a deputation of members of the School Committee and the Home and School Association regarding the completion of the building of the new school.
The head master (Mr Penlington) reported that the attendance for the month had been 288 boys, 271 girls; 25 pupils had been admitted and 17 had fc.en withdrawn. The classrooms had received a thorough cleaning and were in excellent order. The girls in the B basketball team had won the competition. The secretary was instructed to write congratulating them on their success, and also to thank the teachers for the work and interest shown in the scholars during the games. All the instruments for a full band had now been procured, and the boys were making very satisfactory progress. After discussing the hours of the swimming bath it was thought advisable to have same readjusted, and that admission tickets should be issued to all people using the bath. Messrs Stuart, Petrie and Simpson were appointed a sub-committee to go into the matter and report at the next meeting. It was decided to hold the annual picnic early in the new year. It was suggested that a bazaar and fair be held on Saturday, December 14. 1929, in aid of the School Committee’s funds, and that the Home and School Association be asked to organise same with the assistance of the School Committee.
