HURLEY SHIELD.

The Hurley Shield competition was continued to-day. Kaiapoi defaulted to Thistle. Owing to several members of the Kaiapoi team suffering from influenza, it was decided by the club to default to Thistle this afternoon. The game was to have been played at English Park, but when it was known that Kaiapoi would be defaulting, it was decided to play the St Albans-New Brighton match there. ST ALBANS V. NEW BRIGHTON. Lindley, Dryden, Tennent, Donaldson, Cullen, Angas, Bannerman, Donovan. New Brighton—Mitchell, Johnston, Anstey, Waddell, Bird, Burns, Cockle, Cruickshanks, Balloon, Atkinson, Knight. Play broke even in the early stages, neither side showing any fireworks. In a New Bi ighton raid, Atkinson gave Cooke a warm handful, but the 'keeper saved at the cost of a fruitless corner. St Albans tried, via Maypard-Banner-man-Donc-van, but the last named finished weakly. The seasiders came again and St Albans had some anxious moments until Cockle hooked one over the bar. Play continued to swipg from end to end and St Albans forced a corner that Anstey got away safely. Donaldson had an opening far out, but his centre went behind. Half-time came with play in midfield. St Albans 0, New Brighton 0. Early in the second session New Brighton’s inside forwards raced through the defence, but Cooke came out and cleared from Falloon. At the other end Donovan struck the upright from four yards’ range. Just after Angas passed back to Cullen and the centre scored, but was ruled off-side. Both goals were threatened in quick succession then, Atkinson and Donaldson shooting unsuccessfully. Maynard was doing good service for the town men. A melee in the St Albans goal area looked dangerous, but. a free kick relieved. New Brighton were pressing now, and Falfoon, in a fast break, was just outside with a. long drive. Finally Cruickshanks got through with a sharp shot from the right. New Brighton 1. St Albans 0. The scores were equalised within a minute, when Mitchell failed to hold a ground shot from Angas.
