FREE STORAGE PERIOD AT RAILWAY GOODS SHEDS REDUCED.
New regulations relating to the storage of imported goods in the Christchurch railway sheds came into force to-day. In the past free storage has been allowed on home and foreign cargo for a period of five days, intercolonial cargo four days, and coastal cargo two days. The new system provides for a period of free storage on all cargo of two days only. Free storage on the day of delivery, if such is in excess of the free period, is not allowed. Two days , will continue to be allowed from the time when the last of the line is on the shed floor, but if the goods are not taken delivery of during the period so extended, storage will revert back to the time of expiry of the free storage period. It is stated that the Department’s object in reducing the free storage period is to ensure the earlier removal of goods from the sheds, thus guarding against the congestion of which complaint has been made for many months.
